How much topsoil do I need?
To calculate the amount of topsoil you need, the calculator determines the area you're covering and multiplies it by the desired depth. Because depth is normally measured in inches while length and width are measured in feet, the calculator converts the depth to feet before calculating the volume.
The result is shown in cubic yards, which is a common unit used when buying bulk topsoil.
Adding a small allowance can help account for uneven areas, settling, and material lost during installation.
Buying Topsoil: What to Know
Topsoil is commonly sold by the cubic yard for larger projects and in bags for smaller areas. Our calculator gives you the volume of topsoil you need in cubic yards based on the area you’re covering and the desired depth.
When ordering topsoil, consider adding a small allowance for uneven areas, settling, and areas that may require additional material.
For lawns, garden beds, and other larger projects, bulk topsoil is generally easier to purchase and distribute. Bagged topsoil can be more convenient when you only need a small amount.
